Your Pathway to Success: Divided into Four Core Sections

1. ACADEMIC AND LEARNING SKILLS

The programme is divided into two semesters. Semester One includes topics such as upper limb and hand surgery, shoulder and elbow arthroplasty, biomechanics and statistics under expert guidance. Semester Two consists of trauma and the management of lower limb, hip and knee arthroplasty along with revision, foot and ankle surgery and spinal surgery. The teaching staff is a plethora of world-renowned academic faculty and iconic figures in the field of orthopaedics. Every lecture is a unique blend of the latest knowledge in the particular subspecialty, the practical implementation in day-to-day clinical practice and one-to-one interactive involvement. The postgraduate administration team are the constant support and the backbone of the entire department and is just a phone call away to resolve any issues you may encounte

2. CLINICAL ATTACHMENT WITH NHS

This part of the programme, I feel, is a vital aspect which makes it stand alone in the whole of the world. This is the only orthopaedic programme in the United Kingdom which allows a hands-on experience for every MCh (Orth) student allowing them to be part of a clinical attachment in orthopaedic surgery. This experience will give you a flavour of every orthopaedic surgery using leading technology in the surgical field. I was allocated to work under a very experienced senior consultant, lower limb and pelvic surgeon, who was instrumental in giving very useful and practical tips in knee and hip arthroplasty and complex pelvic trauma surgery. I also got the opportunity to work with virtually every single consultant, learning hands-on experience in all orthopaedic surgeries. The exposure to total shoulder learning hands-on experience in all orthopaedic surgeries. The exposure to total shoulder replacement and elbow arthroplasty was awesome. You will receive clinical training at every step of surgical practice in the UK.

3. REFRESHING SURGICAL SKILLS AT CADAVERIC LABS

This is another important aspect of this MCh (Orth) programme which refreshes your knowledge at a state-of-the-art cadaveric lab on the University campus at the worldrenowned Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification. Here human bodies are preserved with a Thiel soft-embalming technique which offers a novel and revolutionary experience of working with human material compared to other preservation methods. The programme encompassesthree cadaveric workshops: upper limb, lower limb and spine, all expertly driven by top-class orthopaedic surgeons.

4. RESEARCH ACTIVITY

This is an essential aspect of academic and clinical activity. I feel this is just the icing on the cake, which every orthopaedic surgeon should develop during their careers. You will select a research topic of your choice then be guided through the ethical approval procedure and finally conduct your clinical research. The research is supported by the world-renowned Motion and Gait Analysis Labs at UDOTS. My topic investigated the comparative study of different pelvic binders for fracture pelvis, on healthy volunteers. All this activity changed my approach towards research and its clinical implementation.
